Juniors

Welcome to the Juniors section of Huddersfield Triathlon Club.

We are a growing section of the club and welcome new members from the age of 7 upwards. We aim to support children to develop and maintain healthy, active lifestyles through the wonderful, invigorating, and challenging sport of triathlon.

First Information

Junior members are welcome to join in our weekly swimming and running training sessions. The club is committed to providing family-friendly training sessions that both parent and junior members can participate in together or simultaneously.

For Sunday swim sessions, juniors have their own coach and use of two lanes while adults are coached in the other lanes. There is an expectation that juniors can swim at least 100m to participate in swim training as this is a structured, but fun, training session, not a swimming lesson.

Track running sessions welcome both juniors and adults together and sets can be adapted according to the individual. Junior members can join in from the age of 8 (or 7 if supervised by a parent or carer).

We host other training sessions throughout the year such as transition coaching to help juniors prepare for their first racing experiences. See the training page for more information on these sessions.

Reasons to Join Us

Junior Multi-sport

We are very lucky in Yorkshire to have a comprehensive and varied racing season. We arrange a race ourselves, the Brooksbank Junior Duathlon which is usually held in April.

Parents are encouraged to help with setting up and marshalling on race day which is great way to get to know other club members. Several other clubs across the region host races too which gives juniors the opportunity to race in duathlons, aquathlons, and both pool and open water triathlons. Juniors who hold BTF membership can compete in the Yorkshire Junior Series where they will be awarded points for the regional championships. Juniors in age categories Tri Star 2 and above can also compete for Yorkshire in the Inter-Regional Championships – an annual end-of-season weekend of racing for the top performing triathletes in all of the ten English regions.

Despite being a relatively young club, HTC has already proudly seen its members win Yorkshire series medals and selection for the Yorkshire team. More information about the series and IRC selection can be found on the BTF website. Also, search for and ask to be added to the Yorkshire Junior Triathlon Series dedicated Facebook group for information and announcements.

Junior members can now purchase their own club kit including tri-suits, hoodies, and t-shirts. See the club kit page for more information and how to order.

For parents, we understand that triathlon is not an inexpensive sport and most children have numerous other hobbies and interests, and that’s how it should be. But it all costs money and children have a habit of growing – quickly. The cycle of buying and selling bikes, shoes, and kit never ends. Fortunately, the club has friendly and approachable parents in a similar position so it is always worth getting to know others and seeing where we can help each other with buying, selling, or passing on kit and equipment.

Final Information

Whether your children are totally new to all three disciplines, or experienced in one or more, we’d love to welcome them.   And as Bethan (10) says “the coaches are all really nice”!
